What Is RTP in Slot Games?

RTP means Return to Player. It is a theoretical percentage describing the proportion of total stakes a game is designed to return as prizes over a very large number of plays. RTP is not a promise about the outcome of any individual spin, player, session, or day.

A game with a theoretical 96% RTP is designed to return an average of approximately 96% of total stakes across extensive play under its stated mathematical model. It does not mean you will receive K96 back whenever you spend K100.

Illustration only: 96% theoretical RTP

Across K100,000 of total stakes in a simplified long-run example, theoretical prizes would average K96,000 and the remaining K4,000 would be the theoretical difference. Actual results can differ considerably, especially over shorter periods.

How Is Actual RTP Calculated?

When observing completed play, actual RTP is calculated as:

Actual RTP (%) = Total Prizes Paid ÷ Total Stakes × 100

For example, if a game receives K50,000 in stakes and awards K46,000 in prizes during an observed period, its actual RTP is 92% for that period. That does not prove the game's designed theoretical RTP is 92%.

Theoretical RTP comes from the game's mathematical design; actual RTP describes recorded results. For more detail, see the UK Gambling Commission's RTP calculation explanation.

Theoretical RTP vs Actual RTP

TermMeaning
Theoretical RTPLong-run return percentage built into a particular game configuration.
Actual RTPPrizes paid divided by stakes recorded over a defined period.
VolatilityHow variable the game's outcomes and prize amounts may be.
House edgeThe theoretical long-run difference between 100% and RTP, where applicable.

For example, a 96% theoretical RTP corresponds to a 4% theoretical house edge. This is not a fixed fee on each bet, and actual sessions can finish above or below the theoretical expectation.

Why Short Sessions Can Be Different

Random variation and game volatility mean that a player's short session may look very different from the long-run RTP figure. Past results do not establish that a particular spin is "due" to win. RTP cannot identify a winning time, predict a bonus round, or guarantee a cashout.

Read our Slot Volatility Guide to understand why game outcomes can differ so much between sessions.

Do All Games Have the Same RTP?

No. The theoretical RTP may vary across games and sometimes across configurations or versions of the same title. Do not assume that every game from a provider has one universal RTP value.

Check the game help or information screen, official provider documentation, and—where available—independent testing information. If a percentage cannot be verified for the exact version, a trustworthy review should mark it as not verified rather than inventing a number.

RTP and PNG Slot Game Providers

Our provider directory covers the brands listed below. Provider names are useful for browsing reviews, but specific RTP data must be checked game by game; the names alone do not establish payout percentages.

See our PNG Slot Game Providers Guide for a more complete explanation of provider comparison.

How to Read RTP Information Responsibly

  • Check whether a stated RTP is theoretical or based on observed play.
  • Look for the specific game title, version, and a reliable source.
  • Remember that RTP does not forecast the next outcome or short-term results.
  • Do not chase losses based on an expectation that a game must "pay back".
  • Use the PNG Responsible Gaming Guide for information on risk and limits.

FAQ – Slot RTP

Does 96% RTP mean I will win K96 from K100?

No. It is a theoretical long-run average across many plays, not an individual payout guarantee.

Can RTP tell me when a slot will pay?

No. RTP cannot predict the outcome or timing of an individual spin.

Is RTP the same as volatility?

No. RTP describes theoretical average return; volatility describes how variable game results may be.

Can a provider have games with different RTP values?

Yes. Game titles and configurations can have different theoretical percentages. Verify each game independently.

Where should I check a game's RTP?

Start with its in-game help or information screen and official provider documentation, where available.
